Today I thought about how so many of us carry past hurts into new relationships, even past hurts from church to church. We come out of the world seeking help for already hurting situations. Things we wish we could leave behind. Past hurts from family members, people we thought were our friends, negative things we have heard spoken into our lives, abuse from relationships, among many other things in life. Then we come into the church and as we are looking for help we never in a thousand years expect to be hurt, on top of the hurt from the world, to have hurt from the church to be added to it. Yes, the word of God says in Jeremiah 3:15, “And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding”. Sometimes we come with so much baggage that we either can’t hear the pastor and the word of God that He/she is bringing forth or we are hurt in the church and don’t see where any good is being done.
I believe that if we really love as the word of God says to do, not with romantic love, family love, or love between friends but love with agape (unconditional) love then maybe, just maybe the love of Christ can work in us and we can really share the love of Christ from heart to heart. I John 4:6 says “God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. The word also talks about leaving the old things behind in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”. Remember, we have to allow God to first wash away the old hurts so that He can replace the void with more of Jesus' love, peace, and joy. The word says in Jeremiah 31:3, “The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee”. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end”. Don’t allow the devil to stop you from reaching your destiny.
Ask God to turn the stony heart flesh, for God to forgive you and help you to forgive others and then to forgive yourself. Seek God’s face while He may be found. Know that Jesus is in control and you no longer have to hold onto the hurt but to allow the love of Jesus to wash over you so that others see the Jesus in you and ask what must I do to be saved? How can I get rid of the hurt in my life? Lead them to Jesus and let the Lord have His way, all the time truly loving them from the heart in Jesus name.
